Next, P.I.S.D.'s system of secondary education offers 13 middle schools which serve sixth through eighth grades, 6 'high schools' that serve grades nine and ten. Three 'senior high schools' that serve the eleventh and twelfth grades. Each household in Plano ISD is zoned to an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, and a senior high school. High schools serve grades 9–10 while senior high schools serve grades 11–12. Any 9th or 10th grader is eligible to participate in extracurricular sports at the senior high level.

In the 2013–2014 school year, Plano ISD opened three academies (4-year high schools). In the 2012–2013 school year, 128 Plano ISD students were named National Merit Semifinalists, more than any other Texas school district.

Plano offers a unique high school system, in which grades 9-10 attend a high school and grades 11-12 attend a senior high. The Plano Independent School District, PISD has three senior high schools (grades 11-12); Plano East, Plano Senior, and Plano West. In Newsweek's 2012 list of best national high schools, Plano West was ranked as 63rd, Plano Senior as 108th, and Plano East as 243rd. Plano schools graduate more of their students than comparable districts. In 2010, 93% of Plano Independent Student District students graduated from high school, 18 percentage points more than Dallas ISD's rate.
